Poster Design for Wider Perspectives Season 2

We are very excited to invite you to the opening of god forbid you draw attention to yourself by Ada M. Patterson in Gemaal op Zuid!

god forbid you draw attention to yourself presents a video installation by Ada M. Patterson, consisting of the two works ‘Bikkel’ and ‘Lookalook.’ The videos show two characters in two different places connected to Patterson: Rotterdam-Zuid, The Netherlands and Bridgetown, Barbados. Embodying strange characters, while making movements that play and break with normative and binary ways of being, various responses of passers-by are evoked. Constructions of masculinity are interrogated through Bikkel, a character that wants to make moves towards softness and vulnerability as a means of survival. Lookalook considers the dangers of seeing and being seen, reflecting on how a society treats bodies that are unexpected or different.

Ada M. Patterson is an artist and writer based between Barbados, London and Rotterdam. She works with masquerade, music, performance, poetry, textiles and video, looking at how storytelling can make identity formation both possible and impossible. In her work she considers the connections between transformation, crisis, grief, rage, disappearance, discretion, self-defence and survival.
